The Digital Humanism Fellowship at the Institute for Human Sciences (IWM) in Vienna invites applications from junior scholars to pursue innovative research on the impact of digitalization across societal, economic, and geopolitical dimensions. The program offers a unique opportunity to collaborate with senior scholars and participate in the Institute’s dynamic academic community.
Objective
The fellowship supports advanced research into the societal effects of digitalization, fostering collaboration between humanities, social sciences, and technology studies.
Fellowship Overview
- Duration: Three consecutive months in autumn 2025.
- Start Date: Fellowship begins on the first day of the month and ends on the last day of the month.
- Location: Vienna, Austria.
- Participation: Fellows actively engage in the IWM’s scholarly community and activities.
Financial Support
- Postdoctoral Fellows: EUR 3,300 per month.
- Doctoral Candidates: EUR 2,750 per month.
- Coverage includes:
- Accommodation and living expenses.
- Travel and health insurance.
- Incidental costs related to the stay.

Eligibility
- Junior Visiting Fellowship:
- Open to those pursuing a doctoral degree or who obtained a PhD within the last four years (as of the application deadline).
- Senior Visiting Fellowship: Invitation-only.
Application Requirements
Applications must be submitted through the IWM online portal. Email submissions will not be accepted.
Required Documents:
- Motivation Letter: Outline the project’s connection to IWM’s mission and the fellowship’s benefits.
- Project Description: Max. 550 characters.
- Project Proposal:
- Objectives.
- Current state of research in the field.
- Methods and work plan.
- Max. 7,500 characters (including spaces).
- Curriculum Vitae: Include a list of publications.
- Two Letters of Recommendation:
- To be submitted directly by referees through the IWM’s online system.
- Referees receive submission instructions via email once the application is completed.
Submission Guidelines:
- Combine all documents into a single PDF file before uploading.
- File names must use Latin characters.
- Deadline: 21 January 2025
Selection Process
- Applications are reviewed by an expert jury.
- Notification of results: Spring semester 2025.
- Decisions are final, and individual feedback will not be provided.
