The University of Birmingham (UOB) is looking for The Research Fellow to support the ‘Making Aid Work for Displaced Women’ project, a UKRI-funded initiative exploring how Islamic philanthropy can improve outcomes for displaced women. The project connects gender, forced migration, and faith humanitarianism to create transformative frameworks for supporting women in displacement contexts.
This interdisciplinary role involves:
- Conducting research (70%).
- Supporting project management and administration (20%).
- Engaging in policy advocacy and capacity building (10%).
Key Responsibilities
Research Activities:
- Conduct literature reviews and stakeholder mapping.
- Collect and analyze primary data using methods like interviews and focus groups, including in the UK and abroad (Bangladesh, Kenya, or Turkey).
- Collaborate with local researchers and communities through co-production methodologies.
- Contribute to developing new conceptual frameworks and tools.
- Draft academic publications and policy briefs for diverse audiences.
Administrative and Policy Engagement:
- Manage and support research-related administration.
- Participate in project-related meetings and advocacy events.
- Develop external relations to enhance policy impact and visibility.
Person Specification
Essential:
- Strong knowledge of gender, forced migration, and (faith) humanitarianism.
- Advanced degree in a relevant field (or equivalent qualifications).
- Experience with data collection and co-production methodologies, particularly in collaboration with Global South partners.
- Proven ability to publish high-quality outputs for varied audiences.
- Excellent communication skills for complex research dissemination.
- Policy advocacy and relationship-building experience.
Desirable:
- Proficiency in foreign languages such as Arabic, Burmese, Turkish, Rohingya, or Swahili.
