The University of Gothenburg invites applications for a doctoral studentship specializing in democracy and human rights within one of the faculty’s third-cycle subjects. The studentship is funded by the Gothenburg Trading Company Fund (Göteborgs Handelskompanis deposition) and focuses on fundamental democratic values, including freedom of thought, opinion, expression, and religion.
Doctoral studies at the Faculty of Social Sciences involve four years of full-time study (240 higher education credits) leading to a Doctor of Philosophy degree.

Eligibility
General Requirements
- Completion of a second-cycle degree, or
- Completion of at least 240 higher education credits, with at least 60 credits at the second-cycle level, or
- Equivalent knowledge obtained in Sweden or abroad.

Evaluation Criteria
Selection is based on the applicant’s potential to benefit from the doctoral programme. Particular consideration will be given to:
- Research Outline: A maximum 4-page outline that includes:
- A clear research problem and research question.
- Relevance to “fundamental democratic values regarding freedom of thought, opinion, expression, and religion.”
- Theories, methods, materials, and ethical considerations.
- Communication Skills: Proven ability to communicate in English (oral and written).
- Supervision Resources: Availability of supervision within the applicant’s chosen subject area.
