The Department of European Law at Maastricht University is seeking a postdoctoral researcher in migration law and governance. The selected candidate will join the SoftEn (Soft Enforcement of EU Migration Law) project, funded by the European Research Council (ERC) and led by Associate Professor Evangelia (Lilian) Tsourdi. The project focuses on the enforcement of EU migration law through socio-legal and qualitative empirical research.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead research on migration policy enforcement and accountability.
  • Publish at least two sole-authored papers within the project themes.
  • Conduct original empirical qualitative research.
  • Contribute to joint research, dataset development, and project publications.
  • Participate in conferences, workshops, and research dissemination.
  • Engage with Maastricht research centers (MCEL, MACIMIDE).
  • Option to supervise master’s and doctoral students.

Eligibility Criteria

  • A PhD (completed within the last five years) in international, European, human rights, or migration law, or related political science fields (EU studies, public policy, migration studies). Candidates close to PhD completion may also apply.
  • Demonstrated affinity with the project topic.
  • Experience with socio-legal and/or empirical qualitative methods.
  • Research track record appropriate for the level of seniority.
  • Fluency in English (additional languages are a plus).
  • Willingness to reside near Maastricht and attend regular meetings.

Employment Benefits

  • Salary: €4,537 – €6,209 per month (full-time).
  • Contract: 0.8 FTE for 24 months (possibility to extend to 1.0 FTE with additional teaching duties).
