The Department of Political Science at the University of Antwerp is offering a full-time doctoral scholarship in International Relations and Conflict Studies. The position is part of the research project “Tracing the Realities of Algorithmic Warfare: From Innovation to Deployment and its Impact on Civilian Harm,” funded by the Research Foundation Flanders (FWO).
The project examines the development and deployment of algorithmic warfare technologies by various actors (e.g., computer scientists, military startups, technology firms) and their impact on civilian harm in conflict zones, focusing on Ukraine and Gaza.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct independent and collaborative field research on algorithmic warfare and its consequences.
- Analyze the role of various actors in the innovation and deployment of AI-based military technologies.
- Publish findings in peer-reviewed international journals.
- Represent the research project at conferences, workshops, and academic events.
- Collaborate with policy stakeholders and civil society organizations.
- Assist in limited teaching and academic support tasks at the University of Antwerp and Utrecht University.
Eligibility Criteria
- Master’s degree in International Relations, Conflict Studies, Anthropology, AI Politics, or a related field (or will obtain it by the start date).
- Strong academic track record.
- Experience with qualitative research (e.g., interviews, open-source investigations, or fieldwork in military/conflict contexts).
- Interest in algorithmic warfare, civilian harm, and digital technologies in war.
- Excellent English language skills (knowledge of Dutch, Ukrainian, or Arabic is a plus).
- Willingness to engage in public communication (media, podcasts, op-eds, infographics).
