This workshop, organized by Dr. Michel Erpelding and Aya Bejermi, will explore the Mixed Courts of Egypt, institutions shaped by empire, international law, and justice. Established through treaties between Egypt and 14 Western powers, the courts functioned for over 70 years, blending French-inspired legal codes with a colonial legal order. Despite their unequal foundations, they became arenas where Egyptians and foreigners navigated legal rights and power dynamics.
Call for Papers:
Researchers in law, history, or related disciplines are encouraged to submit proposals addressing aspects of the Mixed Courts’ history, influence, and legacy.
