Objective & Scope

  • Mission: To support early-career scholars conducting research on the societal, economic, political, and cultural dimensions of digitalization, aligned with the principles of Digital Humanism.
  • Program Format: Each semester, the IWM hosts:
    • One Senior Visiting Fellow (by invitation, 1-month stay)
    • Two Junior Visiting Fellows (via open call, 3-month stays)

Timeline

  • Application Deadline: 21 September 2025 (23:59 CET)
  • Notification of Results: November 2025
  • Fellowship Periods:
    • Spring 2026: March–May or April–June (3 consecutive months)
    • Autumn 2026: September–November (for next cycle)

Eligibility

  • Junior Applicants must be:
    • Currently enrolled in a PhD program, or
    • Within four years of having received their PhD
  • Senior Fellows are invited directly by the IWM

Funding & Benefits

  • Monthly Stipend:
    • €3,300 for postdoctoral fellows
    • €2,750 for PhD students
  • Fellowship Covers:
    • Accommodation, living expenses, travel, and health insurance
    • Office space and access to research facilities
    • Weekday in-house lunches

Application Requirements

Submit all documents in English, as a single PDF file, using Latin characters in the filename:

  1. Motivation Letter
    • Relevance of the project to IWM and Digital Humanism
    • Benefits of staying at the IWM
    • Specific goals for the fellowship period
  2. Short Project Description (max. 550 characters)
  3. Full Project Proposal (max. 7,500 characters, including spaces)
    • Objectives, current state of research, methods, and timeline
  4. Curriculum Vitae (with publication list)
  5. Two Letters of Recommendation
    • Uploaded directly by referees via a link sent after submission

Research Environment

  • Fellows become part of an interdisciplinary research community at the IWM.
  • Opportunities to participate in:
    • Seminars, lectures, and workshops
    • Public events and collaborative academic discussions

Program Leadership and Support

  • Funded by the Austrian Federal Ministry of Innovation, Mobility, and Infrastructure
  • Academic leadership in collaboration with key figures in Digital Humanism, including contributors to the Vienna Manifesto on Digital Humanism
