The Scholarship Department of the Rosa-Luxemburg-Stiftung awards financial grants to highly qualified undergraduate, Master’s, and PhD students from Germany and abroad. The program is designed to support individuals who combine academic excellence with strong social and political engagement in line with the Stiftung’s values.

Focus on Equity and Inclusion

The foundation actively seeks to counteract social, political, and gender discrimination. Preference is given to:

  • Women
  • Students from non-academic or migrant backgrounds
  • Socially disadvantaged individuals
  • People with disabilities

Applications from students in scientific and technical disciplines and from technical colleges are encouraged.


Eligibility & Selection Criteria

  • Academic Excellence: Proof of above-average achievement at school or university
  • Social & Political Engagement: Commitment aligned with the Rosa-Luxemburg-Stiftung’s aims
  • German Language Proficiency: B2 level or above
  • Personal/Family Background: Considered as part of selection process

Scholarship Programs

1. International Scholarships (Master’s & PhD)

  • For foreign students temporarily residing in Germany for study or research
  • Applicants must be enrolled at a state or state-recognized German university
  • Master’s students must plan to return to their home country after completing their studies
  • State examination or diploma students must have completed basic studies

2. Lux Like Studium (German Students & Some International Applicants)

  • Supports students from non-academic backgrounds starting with the first semester
  • Encourages access to higher education through financial and mentorship support

3. Study Scholarships (German Students & Eligible EU Applicants)

  • For students meeting § 8 BAföG regulations (German citizens, immigrants with permanent residence prospects, some EU students)
  • Available from the second semester onwards
  • Funding amount and duration based on BAföG rules

4. PhD Scholarships (Domestic & International)

  • Available for all disciplines except medicine, dentistry, and veterinary medicine
  • Funding usually lasts three years
  • Applicants must be accepted at a German university

  • Symposia, workshops (rhetoric, conflict management, methodology)
  • Text and writing training, time and self-management courses
  • Opportunities for self-organization through working groups
  • Mentorship from over 250 academic advisors and Rosa-Luxemburg networks
