A doctoral scholarship is offered in the field of Islamic Law and Gender, as part of the European Research Council-funded BILQIS project, focusing on Muslim women’s access to justice in Europe.
Funding Details
- Covers full tuition fees.
- Annual stipend of €22,000 for up to 4 years (renewable annually based on satisfactory progress).
- Candidates must join the full-time PhD program by September 2025.
Research Focus
- Part of BILQIS Work Package 3 (WP3): Investigates Islamic family laws, gender equality, and access to justice in Norway, Sweden, and Ireland.
- Focuses on socio-religious and socio-legal structures affecting women’s rights.
- Includes comparative textual/contextual analysis and qualitative interviews with activists, religious leaders, civil society actors, academics, and legal/state authorities.
Candidate Requirements
Essential:
- Background in gender studies, equality studies, and Islamic legal discourses.
- Knowledge of Islamic family laws and familiarity with the social contexts of Norway, Sweden, and Ireland.
- Ability to use textual and qualitative research methodologies.
- Proficiency in English (minimum IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL iBT 90).
Desirable:
- Fluency in Arabic, Persian, Norwegian, or Swedish.
