The Harry Frank Guggenheim (HFG) African Fellow Awards aim to support emerging African scholars conducting research on violence and related issues on the African continent. The awards recognize scholars whose work promises to contribute to understanding and mitigating violence in its various forms.

Program Details

  • Frequency: Biennial (every two years).
  • Eligibility:
    • Scholars aged 40 or younger.
    • Enrolled in a Ph.D. program at an accredited African university.
    • Residing on the African continent.
  • Fields of Study: Open to social and natural sciences or allied disciplines with relevance to violence and aggression.

Research Focus Areas

The Foundation welcomes proposals on topics such as:

  • War and conflict.
  • Crime and terrorism.
  • Family and intimate-partner violence.
  • Effects of climate change and natural resource competition.
  • Racial, ethnic, and religious conflict.
  • Political extremism and nationalism.

Research proposals should aim to:

  • Investigate mechanisms driving violence.
  • Provide findings relevant to policies addressing violence.
  • Explore historical perspectives relevant to current violence.
  • Examine outcomes of violence if they serve as causes for future violence.
