Fellowship Overview

The Arab Reform Initiative (ARI) invites applications for the inaugural Bassma Kodmani Fellowship, honoring the legacy of Dr. Bassma Kodmani, a scholar and activist dedicated to democratic transitions in Syria and the Arab region.

The fellowship seeks researchers committed to fostering political and social change in Syria, with a focus on analyzing and supporting Syria’s transition to inclusive governance. Fellows will produce in-depth research, policy recommendations, and actionable insights addressing Syria’s political, security, economic, and human rights challenges.

Responsibilities

  1. Conduct In-Depth Research:
    • Analyze political, military, and security developments in Syria, including governance structures and conflict dynamics.
    • Assess the impact of transitions on human rights, humanitarian conditions, and local populations.
    • Gather data through interviews, secondary reports, and open-source research.
  2. Report Writing and Analysis:
    • Produce high-quality research outputs: analytical papers, policy briefs, and reports.
    • Provide actionable recommendations to policymakers, NGOs, and international bodies.
    • Ensure all outputs meet rigorous documentation and ethical standards.
  3. Engagement and Collaboration:
    • Collaborate with ARI partners, think tanks, and stakeholders.
    • Participate in panels, forums, and conferences on Syria’s political landscape.
  4. Promote Human Rights and Governance:
    • Uphold democratic values and good governance principles in all research and advocacy efforts.
  5. Language Proficiency:
    • Write and present research findings in English and Arabic.

Qualifications

  • Education:
    • Minimum Master’s degree (PhD preferred) in Political Science, International Relations, Middle Eastern Studies, or related fields.
  • Experience:
    • 5–7 years researching Syria’s political, security, and human rights issues.
    • Deep understanding of Syria’s political landscape and governance structures.
    • Experience with NGOs, think tanks, or international organizations focused on Syria is highly desirable.
  • Skills:
    • Exceptional communication skills in English and Arabic.
    • Proven ability to write research papers, policy briefs, and commentaries.
    • Proficiency with research tools and methodologies.
  • Personal Traits:
    • Strong commitment to supporting Syria’s democratic transition.
    • Collaborative yet independent work ethic.
    • Attention to detail and ability to meet tight deadlines.
