University College Dublin (UCD) is offering two PhD scholarships as part of the ERC-funded Coercive In/Justice (GENCOERCTRL) Project, based in the Sutherland School of Law. The project explores coercive control in conflict-affected settings through a feminist phenomenological approach, with a focus on legal accountability in transitional justice.
Scholarship Details:
- Stipend: €25,000 per year
- Fees: Covered up to non-EU rate
- Duration: Up to 4 years (renewable annually based on progress)

PhD Research Streams:
- Truth Processes & Coercive Control – Examines how truth commissions address gendered harm, using qualitative socio-legal analysis.
- International Criminal Law & Coercive Control – Investigates how international courts handle coercive control in gender-based violence cases.
Candidates will conduct archival and testimonial research, with possible fieldwork. They should propose case study sites (excluding Colombia and Northern Ireland, already covered in the project).
Eligibility & Requirements:
- Open to Irish, EU, and international applicants.
- Background in law, socio-legal studies, human rights, or related fields.
- Experience in doctrinal and socio-legal methodologies (ethnographic or phenomenological methods preferred).
- English proficiency: IELTS 7.5 or TOEFL 109 (if applicable).
