About Cairo 52
Founded in 2020, Cairo 52 advocates for sexual and bodily freedoms in MENA, focusing on LGBTQ+ individuals, people living with HIV (PLHIV), sex workers, and women. Through legal research, pro bono legal aid, and media initiatives, the institute amplifies marginalized voices.
Background
The MENA region faces one of the fastest-growing HIV epidemics worldwide. Access to HIV services is low, with many PLHIV unaware of their status. Legal and social frameworks often criminalize key populations (KPs), creating barriers to prevention, testing, and treatment.

- Access to Services: Barriers for PLHIV and KPs in accessing HIV care.
- Criminalization & Legal Reform: Impact of punitive laws on public health.
- Underrepresented Populations: Challenges for sex workers, people who use drugs, transgender individuals, and migrants.
- Spotlight on Marginalized Contexts: Focus on North Africa, Levant, conflict zones.
- Community-Led Responses: Role of civil society and grassroots advocacy.
Requirements
- Essays should propose policy-oriented, actionable solutions, including recommendations for funders, INGOs, and stakeholders.
Submission Guidelines
- Who can apply: Researchers, legal experts, activists, healthcare workers, and KPs engaged with the MENA region.
- Abstract: Up to 300 words + 100-word bio.
- Full essay (if accepted): 2000–4000 words, original work, consistent citation style.
Incentives & Publication
- Prize: €300 for each of the five selected essays.
- Essays will be published in Cairo 52’s special issue.
