Deadline: October 30, 2025
The Ford Foundation’s JustFilms initiative has opened its 2025 call for documentary grant applications, offering vital support to filmmakers who use storytelling as a force for justice and cultural transformation. This year’s call invites artist-driven, feature-length documentaries that creatively engage with pressing social issues and challenge dominant narratives around power, identity, and inequality.
Reimagining the Power of Story
Since its inception, JustFilms has stood at the intersection of art, activism, and imagination—backing filmmakers who dare to question the status quo and amplify marginalized voices. The initiative aligns with the Ford Foundation’s broader mission of dismantling systemic inequality and advancing social, gender, racial, and economic justice worldwide.
Through this open call, the foundation seeks independent feature-length documentaries (50+ minutes) that inspire empathy, elevate underrepresented perspectives, and provoke meaningful public dialogue.
What the Grant Supports
The JustFilms Documentary Grant funds projects across all stages of production—from development to post-production—provided that filmmakers retain creative control and rights ownership.
Supported projects must be:
Feature-length documentaries (minimum 50 minutes)
Artistically innovative and socially relevant
Independent productions led by filmmakers who own their creative rights
The program does not fund:
- Student or narrative (fiction) films
- Short films, series, or podcasts
- Commissioned or previously premiered works
- Impact campaigns or AR/VR projects
Selection Criteria
Submissions are evaluated through four key lenses designed to identify bold, impactful, and independent storytelling:
- Thematic Alignment (30%) – How well does the project engage with issues of inequality, justice, and power?
- Intersectional Representation (25%) – Does the story authentically reflect diverse identities and experiences?
- Innovation in Storytelling (25%) – How creatively does the filmmaker expand the form and impact of documentary cinema?
- Production Viability (20%) – Is the project feasible, independent, and guided by a clear creative vision?
Who Can Apply
Applications are open to filmmakers worldwide, with particular consideration for projects connected to regions where the Ford Foundation operates. Independent artists, especially those from underrepresented communities, are encouraged to apply.
The Application Process
Applicants should review the JustFilms FAQ and prepare materials aligned with the Documentary Core Application used by major funders such as Sundance and the International Documentary Association.
After initial review, shortlisted candidates may be invited to submit additional materials. Due to high application volume, the foundation cannot provide individual feedback.
A Commitment to Justice and Artistic Freedom
The Ford Foundation believes that storytelling is an act of resistance—a way to envision fairer futures and expose systems of oppression. Through JustFilms, the foundation continues to nurture independent voices and creative autonomy, investing in films that move hearts and minds while shaping public discourse.
By supporting visionary filmmakers, JustFilms builds a more inclusive global film ecosystem—one that celebrates artistic courage and the diversity of human experience.
