The UNFCCC–UNU Early Career Climate Fellowship Programme is once again opening its doors to talented young professionals from developing countries who aspire to shape the future of international climate action. This highly competitive fellowship offers a transformative opportunity to gain hands-on experience at the intersection of global climate policy and research, hosted in Bonn, Germany the heart of international climate governance.

A Launchpad for the Next Generation of Climate Experts

Jointly offered by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the United Nations University (UNU), the Early Career Climate Fellowship is designed to cultivate the next generation of leaders driving solutions for climate resilience and sustainability.

The fellowship provides participants with direct exposure to international climate negotiations, policy development, and applied research, enabling them to contribute meaningfully to global climate efforts.


Fellowship Structure and Duration

Fellowships typically last between 12 months and 2 years, depending on project needs and individual performance. During this period, fellows will work closely with teams at UNU and UNFCCC on a range of initiatives that bridge scientific research, policy implementation, and capacity building.

Upon completion, fellows are expected to apply their knowledge and skills either in their home countries or within the global climate policy arena, contributing to climate adaptation, mitigation, and sustainable development goals.


Who Should Apply?

This program is aimed at academically outstanding young graduates from developing countries, particularly:

  • Early-career professionals with a strong interest in climate policy, environmental science, or sustainable development
  • Applicants with demonstrated commitment to advancing climate action at national or international levels
  • Women from least developed countries (LDCs) are strongly encouraged to apply
