Scholars and researchers are invited to submit papers for the British Academy Conference titled “Algeria: Historical Struggles and Imagined Utopias,” which will take place on 28–29 May 2026 at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE).

Organised by the LSE Middle East Centre and the Centre for Peace and Security at Coventry University, this multidisciplinary event aims to create a platform for academic exchange and public dialogue around Algeria’s rich historical legacies and its evolving political, social, and cultural landscapes. The conference is supported by the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) and funded by the British Academy.

Conference Focus

The event seeks to explore Algeria’s revolutionary past, its ongoing struggles, and its future possibilities through decolonial, feminist, and interdisciplinary perspectives. It will bring together scholars, early-career researchers, and the public to discuss how Algeria’s experiences continue to inform debates on independence, governance, identity, and social transformation.

Submissions are welcome from a broad range of disciplines, including:

  • History and Politics
  • Sociology and Gender Studies
  • Geography and Ecology
  • Economics and Governance
  • Art, Film, and Media Studies
  • Literature, Language, and Diaspora Studies

Early-career researchers are particularly encouraged to apply.

Submission Guidelines

  • Submit a single Word document including:
    • Paper title
    • Relevant keywords
    • Abstract (max. 200 words)
    • Short biography
  • Language: English
  • Panel submissions are not accepted
  • Deadline: 21 November 2025
  • Notification of acceptance: December 2025
  • Conference fee: £40 (standard) / £20 (students or those not in employment)
  • Registration opens: January 2026
