United People Global (UPG) is now accepting applications for the 2026 UPG Sustainability Leader Program, one of the world’s largest and most inclusive sustainability leadership initiatives. The program trains more than 500 emerging leaders each year, equipping them to implement local, citizen-led sustainability projects and become part of a worldwide network of changemakers.
To date, UPG Sustainability Leaders have trained over 86,000 citizens globally, expanding grassroots action for sustainability across communities and regions.
About the Program
The UPG Sustainability Leadership Program is a free, competitive training initiative offering participants:
- Structured training on sustainability leadership
- Skills-building workshops
- Global networking and collaboration
- Opportunities to implement community impact projects
- A pathway to become certified UPG Sustainability Leaders
Participants begin as Candidates in the training journey. Those who complete all required components and demonstrate strong leadership potential graduate as official UPG Sustainability Leaders.
Who Can Apply?
UPG seeks a diverse global cohort. No specific education or professional background is required. Candidates must:
- Be passionate about at least one sustainability topic (environment, education, jobs, climate, oceans, public health, etc.)
- Be between 18 and 35 years old between 1 March and 31 July 2026
- Come from any country
- Have any level of experience (beginners and experienced leaders welcome)
- Be motivated to take action in their communities
- Be able to read, write and communicate in English
UPG strongly encourages applicants of all identities, backgrounds, and abilities to apply.
Evaluation Criteria
Applications are reviewed in four main areas:
Profile
Reflects the applicant’s background and potential to enhance program diversity.
Motivation
Shows commitment to sustainability action and interest in UPG’s mission.
Capability
Demonstrates practical skill, leadership ability, and community engagement potential.
Potential for Impact
Assesses the applicant’s proposed ideas and their likelihood to create positive change.
Optional Video Submission
Applicants may submit an optional two-minute video to strengthen their application. The video can:
- Introduce the applicant
- Explain their motivation
- Answer any section of the application
- Demonstrate English proficiency
Videos may be submitted via link in the application or uploaded after applying to:

Videos must be submitted before the application deadline.
Program Cost
- Training is fully funded and free of charge
- A CHF 5 application fee (approximately USD 6) is required for processing
