The American University in Cairo (AUC) and Cairo University, in partnership with the Arab Political Science Network (APSN) and the Journal of South Asian and Middle Eastern Studies (JSAMES), invite paper proposals for publication in JSAMES in Fall 2026 or Spring 2027.
This call targets early career scholars based in Egypt and the MENA region whose research focuses on political and socio-economic transformations in the Middle East and North Africa. Submissions may address topics such as political institutions and processes, conflict and cooperation, political economy and inequality, environmental politics, securitization, and regional change. Interdisciplinary approaches are welcome.
Eligibility
- Early career scholars based in Egypt or the MENA region
- Research focused on MENA-related themes
- Final publication subject to successful peer review
Submission Guidelines
Applicants should submit:
- An extended abstract (1,500–2,000 words) outlining the research question, theoretical framework, methodology, and main argument
- A CV

- Notification of acceptance: 20 January 2026
- First draft (6,000–8,000 words): 30 March 2026
- Online workshop: Spring 2026
- In-person workshop in Cairo: 26–30 April 2026
- Final manuscript submission: 1 September 2026
This initiative offers selected authors mentorship from senior scholars, opportunities for academic exchange, and potential publication in a leading peer-reviewed journal.
