Overview
Human Rights Watch (HRW) is seeking a Research Assistant to support its work on Libya and Tunisia within the Middle East and North Africa Division. The role combines research, monitoring, advocacy, and administrative responsibilities, and will operate from HRW’s office in Tunis. The Research Assistant will work directly with researchers covering Tunisia and Libya, and closely with the Deputy Director of the MENA Division.
Key Responsibilities
Research and Monitoring
- Conduct in-person and remote interviews under supervision.
- Monitor political, social, and human rights developments in Tunisia and Libya and prepare summaries.
- Translate research materials as needed.
- Draft internal and external documents, including research notes and background materials.
Coordination and Communication
- Maintain effective communication with internal teams and external stakeholders.
- Assist with logistical planning for field research, including travel arrangements and preparation of materials.
Administration and Support
- Manage administrative tasks for the North Africa team.
- Contribute to strategy discussions and track progress toward divisional goals.
- Perform additional duties as required.
Qualifications
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in human rights, international relations, law, social sciences, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
Experience
- Minimum of one year of relevant work experience.
- Experience related to Libya, Tunisia, or human rights is highly desirable.
Skills
- Fluency in English, with excellent written and oral communication skills in Arabic and French.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively.
- Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently, manage competing tasks, and meet deadlines.
- Strong judgment and a commitment to confidentiality.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
- Demonstrated interest in the Middle East and North Africa, and in human rights work.
Salary and Benefits
- Salary range: USD 43,000 to 48,000 annually.
